New York-Presbyterian Heart Surgeon Dr. Allan Stewart will run on Team Heartosaurus in the 2011 Great Cow Harbor 10k Race

He is revered by his patients due to his ability to connect with them, and because of the genuine relationships he nurtures with them after his cutting and stitching is done. Last year I almost died because I refused to have  open heart surgery for an aortic aneurysm out of fear. He convinced me to have the operation, and alleviated my concerns. During my recovery I got bold and thanked him by challenging him to run the NYC Marathon with me. I told him we needed to put his work to the test. A non-runner; he humored me and signed up, trained a little, and ran the marathon with me exactly a year after the surgery. Since then we've kept in touch and he's continued to touch the lives of patients that I know. He promotes a zest for life, and it's not only about the physical; he encourages patients to re-evaluate their lives and realize their dreams.
I kicked his ass in the marathon and figured I would put my feet up, but in a few weeks he is coming out to my home turf to run The Great Cow Harbor 10k Race with me and my family. I guess he's hooked! He's running the NYC Marathon again in November too!

All jokes aside, it's been a lot of fun knowing Dr. Stewart. I never thought I would be the same after being cut open and that's why I tried to avoid surgery for so long. He was right about how things would be afterward and I'm amazed everyday at what I can do. Dr. Stewart is a guy who is up for any challenge if he thinks it will help a patient's quality and outlook on life. I bet there's a patient out there who's into line dancing :)

The 2011 Great Cow Harbor 10k Race will be held on Saturday September 17 in Northport, NY. It is open to all ages and abilities and there is also a 2k fun run for children and less competitive runners. It is by far the best family race in the area, and funds raised go to a number of charities. The beautiful course winds through the quaint and historic village, and finishes near the waterfront. The event is covered nationally by Runner's World and ESPN, and is highlighted by a weekend of festivities including a legendary after race party, parade, and craft fair.
